FOUNDATION TRAINING...and the booty reach

My whole body is still vibrating as I am writing this post…

On Saturday morning I took my first Foundation Training class…taught by Summit Performance instructors Kathy and Caroleen.

By Saturday afternoon, every single muscle in my body was still shaking as if I have been wearing one of those vibrating weight loss belts from the 1950s!

The best way to describe this group class (ONE HOUR long!) is this:  it is a workout in which all the smaller, often ignored, but no less important, muscle groups are worked--almost to failure.  In the class, we kept our bodies in neutral spine (YAY!);  which is the way we walk around in our daily life anyway, so it makes sense, right?  We really fired up all the muscles along the back of the body (what we trainers call the Posterior Chain) to create a nice strong, supportive web for the torso.  Gravity and body weight become your resistance.  One exercise in particular calls for a deep squat with the hips pulled way back, all the muscles of the core engaged, spine lengthened to the point of no return…and we held, and kept holding.  It felt like hovering in a public port–a-potty with a gorilla on your back.  Everyone in the class was shaking…(even the 6 foot–plus fireman who can squat 2x his body weight).

With my spinal extension and my booty reach I should be ready to appear in a Shakira video.  Right after the class I felt taller, more in touch with my deep abdominals and posture muscles.  The takeaway is that I now remember to apply the “hip hinge” in everyday activities, (like unloading the dishwasher, for example) so my low back is always protected and my hamstrings are strong like a bull!
